Organic Morphologies (2012)
“In an infinite universe, with no god to direct it, the finite experiences of human existence must necessarily repeat themselves eternally.” (Nietzsche's Theory of Eternal Recurrence)
In a new photographic series, Holly Armishaw focuses on the underlying elements of Starchitect Zaha Hadid’s recent creations. The controversial architect throws out conventional platonic geometries in favour of a more natural approach, sometimes abandoning right angles and straight lines altogether. Hadid’s early works pay homage to the strong fluid lines and bold colour blocks of Russian Suprematism, but have more recently shifted their fluidity to organic formations. Armishaw hypothesizes a resurgence of Art Nouveau, or “Neo-Art Nouveau” as a growing trend in both architecture and avant-garde fashion.
Integrating herself into these architectural environments in Art Nouveau inspired gowns commissioned for this project, she embodies her theories by emulating and articulating the soft, feminine gestures of what she recognizes as a “feminine architecture”. The show, Organic Morphologies expands upon Armishaw’s very early work and ideas that architecture parallels the human body, just as Art Nouveau and Zaha Hadid’s structures parallel the natural world in stylized and sometimes subtle forms.
